The Depths of Durangrar

The idea of a Fog of War, the inability to see your enemy’s movements, has always been a challenging thing to re-create in board game form. The Depths of Durangrar, has certainly come up with an innovative solution to this problem: just play in complete darkness! What!? I hear you cry! No, you read me right. Turn off all the lights and hang the black out curtains, the only thing the intrepid explorers of these dark caverns are going to be able to see is the small pool of light cast out by the LEDs mounted in their miniature’s bases. The ‘dungeon master’, on the other hand, see’s all thanks to the night vision goggles included in the game! Seriously! I can’t make this up!

As an explorer you’ll be stumbling about a darkened maze that you can’t even see, twisting ever deeper into the cavern, collecting treasure and, maybe, working together to ensure survival. Meanwhile, the DM will be moving a group of terrifying monsters about the dungeon, setting traps for your intrepid heroes (/thieves), your only clues being the sounds of pieces being moved about the board, and what little movement you can catch at the edge of your pool of light.

I can’t tell if this is a good game. It’s a dungeon crawl, with dice combat, and a versatile, modular maze board that could take quite a while to set up. The art work is not great, the miniatures fairly simplistic, but let’s be honest, if you’re playing in pitch darkness none of that is really going to matter! This is definitely a unique idea, an experience game. If nothing else, this is a project you need to at least check out!

Escape the depths before May 27th.

Other Great Games

Tesla Vs EdisonTesla vs. Edison: Powering Up! – An expansion to Tesla vs. Edison, the shocking game depicting the competing business enterprises of the eponymous inventors. Powering Up! adds headquarters, a new upgradeable player board with associated actions and options, a 6th faction (a woman!), historical events, more luminaries (women!) and propaganda cards, as well as some different scoring rules that shifts some of the focus away from the stock market. Ends May 25th.

MistfallHeartOfMists
Mistfall: Heart of the Mists – A stand-alone expansion to the Mistfall co-operative adventure card game, featuring a whole slew of new, lovingly illustrated cards. Seems like it’s mostly lots more stuff, but also a good entry point for new players. Ends May 26th.

DragonHazard
Dragon Hazard: The Saviors of Havinia
– Bringing a successful Japanese board game across to western audiences. Dragon Hazard is the tale of a brave bunch of adventurers exploring the lands of Havinia, taking on quests and gathering powerful items in order to eventually face, and slay, the terrible Dragon. Ends May 28th.

DaleOfMerchants2
Dale of Merchants 2 – Dale of Merchants was a Kickstarter top pick of ours some time ago because of it’s very interesting combination of deck building and deck deconstruction in the pursuit of the best market stall in town. A great variability was created by each game combining 3 of the available decks together, and Dale of Merchants 2 adds six more unique decks! A great starting point and an expansion for fans. Ends May 29th.
