The NSPCC Big Board Game Day!

Today is a special day on the blog. Instead of just talking about games and how fun they are, I get to talk about how we can use these fantastic creations for a great cause! And all it need involve is doing something we love doing anyway: playing games.

NSPCC Games 2

The NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) have announced a Big Board Game Day for the 27th May 2016!

A big board game day!? Count me in! So what’s the idea? Simply that those who are interested get together to play some board games on or around that date. Then, if you do, just ask that everyone who takes part makes a small donation. This can be as small a group as your regular group of friends or your family. But if you fancy it, you can get in contact with the NSPCC here to be sent a fundraising pack, free of charge.

NSPCC Fundraising Pack

The fundraising pack contains a pile of ideas and resources to give you a starting point for organising something a bit bigger. Maybe with your work colleagues or with your school. Maybe with your local community or board game club/store. If you feel up to the task this could be a really amazing thing to do!

I’m planning on running a small event with the student community at my work, just a simple board games evening during the week. The plan is simply to ask for a voluntary donation as people arrive. As an extra, I’ll probably be running a raffle with some old games up for grabs. It’s not all set in stone yet, but I’ll let you all know how we get on!

NSPCC Games

The NSPCC is a UK charity whose work is focussed on rescuing and rehabilitating children that have been the victims of abuse. These poor kids have had to live through some of the most horrific experiences imaginable. There is no simple cure, but the work that the NSPCC does in helping them is invaluable.

Play is one of the more valuable tools the NSPCC has as a means of communicating with these kids, and for helping them come to terms with what has happened to them. By coming together to play the games we love, we can also do something to help.

If you would like to get involved with organising your board game day/evening, check out the Big Board Game day website for more details!

I’ve set up a JustGiving page for our event here: https://www.justgiving.com/creaking-shelves. If you can’t take part or set up your own evening, then do consider donating a small amount there. JustGiving is a quick and secure way of supporting charities. Any money you donate is transferred directly to the charity itself.

And thank you for reading this post! Normal board game commentary shall resume shortly 😀
