Top 5 Star Wars Games

According to Board Game Geek, the vast database of board and card game information primarily curated by its very enthusiastic community. Every game has a rank within that library and, purely by chance, we’ve taken a look at what the board gaming community thinks are the world’s best Star Wars games. These are, most certainly, the games you are looking for!

#5 Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones – Pewter & Bronze Effect Chess Set

Wait, seriously? This can’t count! It’s just Chess! Even worse, it’s Attack of the Clones. No, this is NOT the game you’re looking for. Let’s try this again.

Star Wars Queens Gambit

#5 Star Wars: The Queens Gambit

Oh God! Even worse! It’s the Phantom Menace! But wait, don’t run away just yet. The Queen’s Gambit recreates the thrilling* final battle of that first episode, including the attack on the trade federation ship, the gungan distraction on the plain, the Queen’s assault on the palace, and the jedi fight in the generator room. All at the same time. Just look at those boards!

Star Wars Queens Gambit Boards

Pure insanity, in the best possible way! Even more excitingly, the mechanics running this game’s engine are thoroughly lubricated with awesome. You’ll be playing cards to determine which battlefield to influence, so you need to be careful not to neglect any one in particular. But each round you both chose 4 of these cards in secret, allowing you to potentially make a strong push on a particular front before your opponent can react! Sadly, the Queen’s Gambit is very hard to come by nowadays, but this same sense of fighting across multiple fronts, as well as simple card driven play, is also captured in the superb Memoir 44 or Battlelore games. If this multi-faceted battle sounds appealing to you, check them out!

Star Wars Armada

#4 Star Wars Armada

Ever wanted to blow up a star destroyer!? OF COURSE YOU HAVE! Well in Star Wars: Armada, you’ll be trying to do just that, or maybe even better you’ll be put in control of one these fountains of turbolaser death! It’s a game of epic confrontations between the biggest ships in the Star wars universe, and really shows off just how tiny the rebel forces are compared to the mighty Empire war machines. But while they are small, they are much more manoeuvrable… enough to give you the edge?

Star Wars Armada Battle

This isn’t just a game about the big ships either. Small X Wings and Tie Fighters will buzz about like flies until ordered to swarm your enemies by your commanders. One more weapon in your fleet’s arsenal. Star Wars: Armada might be a more challenging game than Star Wars: X Wing Miniatures Game (more on that later), but it is a more expansive, more epic conflict too.

Star Wars Card Game

#3 Star Wars: The Card Game

For a battle of greater scope, a veritable war perhaps, look no further than the Star Wars Card Game. A war between good an evil, a race to liberate the galaxy or crush the rebellion. For it is only a matter of time before the Death Star becomes a “fully armed and operational battle station!” In this race against time (for the Jedi, Rebellion and Smuggler factions) you’ll fling your forces against the enemies (Sith, Imperial Navy and Scum and Villainy factions) defending their chosen objectives, whilst simultaneously trying to defend your own. Attempting to come out on top in this cosmic balancing act is the challenge!

Star Wars Card Game Cards

Described as a Living Card Game, Star Wars: The Card Game involves constructing decks of cards with which to do battle with your opponent, in a similar way to the legendary/infamous (depending on your point of view) Magic: The Gathering. Unlike that, however, all expansion packs have known contents, and it is merely a matter of choosing which cards you want for your deck and picking up the relevant packs. That’s not to say you won’t end up giving lots of money away, but you’ll feel better doing it. Of course, there’s nothing stopping you from just enjoying the premade decks that come with the base game! Nothing at all…

Star Wars XWing

#2 Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game

The ever-popular X-Wing Miniatures game finally puts you in the cockpit of your X-Wing fighter, or the Millenium Falcon, or… or Slave 1! Oh my God! Oh my God! OK, get a grip!

Any Star Wars fan should struggle to resist the temptation of playing with these beautifully detailed and pre-painted miniatures. I, mean, even just running around the flat “neeeeee-aaaaaawww”-ing. But it wouldn’t be this high on the list if the game wasn’t also superb! That all comes down to the brilliant dials with which you secretly decided how each ship would move before you know where your opponent’s ships will be, and demanding you put yourself in your opponent’s shoes. Where would I move if I were her? But does she know that already?? These mind games are the beating heart of X-Wing.

Star Wars XWing Dogfight

Whereas Star Wars: Armada is an awe-inspiring if ponderous whale of a game, X-Wing is a sleek darting minnow. You aren’t recreating battles on such an epic scale, at least not without a pile of expansions and a few hours, but that’s not the purpose of X-Wing. This is a game that sits you in your fighter in a savage dogfight with your opponent. Its simplicity makes it accessible to anyone, and the quality components give it its appeal. A must for any Star Wars fan!

Star Wars IMperial Assault

#1 Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Just inching ahead of X-Wing to snatch the top spot like a bothan spy with the Death Star plans, Star Wars: Imperial Assault takes the action to the ground with a brave band of rebel heroes taking the fight to the Empire. One player will control the Imperial forces, including a mass of Storm Troopers, Darth Vadar, and a huge, plastic AT-ST! Once again the components here are stunning and any miniature painting fans are going to have a ball! The other players, and there can be up to 4 on the hero side making this the only multi-player game on this list, will lead their heroes into the lion’s den to, well, anything from rescuing prisoners to obtaining your jedi’s lightsaber!

Star Wars Imperial Assault Game

You see, far from being a stand-alone battle, each game forms part of a larger campaign, telling an epic story over the course of several missions and game nights. Will your heroes defeat the dark forces of the Empire, or be crushed? As the game progresses, your heroes will gain experience and new equipment, making you stronger, but so too do the Empire’s troops! There is no easy ride in this galaxy! The multiple rulebooks might make this game a little intimidating for new players, and it really needs an Imperial player who knows the rules well, but that effort will be rewarded. Not only is Imperial Assault the highest rated Star Wars game, it is one of the highest rated games, period. So, grab your blaster and prepare for battle!
